All players, enemies, and NPCs possess an array of Attributes that define their playstyle and capabilities. Players start the game with a total of 26 attribute points which are determined by their species and background selection. Species determines the inital 20, and background grants another 6 attribute points. Players can gain additional attribute points through certain skill unlocks, equipment or spells.
Attributes directly influence skill checks by acting as modifiers. The total points in an attribute determine the bonus added to related skill checks. For example, if you have 8 points in the Strength (STR) attribute, you can add a +8 bonus to Strength-based skill checks. However, to apply this modifier, you must first unlock the appropriate skill upgrade. Most skills require reaching Skill Level II before the attribute modifier can be added to your skill checks.
