Players start the game with a total of 26 attribute points which are determined by their species and background selection. Species determines the inital 20, and background grants another 6 attribute points. Players can gain additional attribute points through certain skill unlocks, equipment or spells. ==== Skill Check Modifier ==== Attributes directly influence skill checks by acting as modifiers. The total points in an attribute determine the bonus added to related skill checks. For example, if you have 8 points in the Strength (STR) attribute, you can add a +8 bonus to Strength-based skill checks. However, to apply this modifier, you must first unlock the appropriate skill upgrade. Most skills require reaching //Skill Level II// before the attribute modifier can be added to your skill checks.
